Beyond empathy: Cognitive capabilities increase or curb altruism in middle childhood

Altruism in children is usually explained by empathy. This study asks what cognitive capacities add on top of it in middle childhood, and finds them cutting both ways — increasing generosity in some conditions and curbing it in others.
