Dominique Makowski

Trained as a clinical neuropsychologist and CBT psychotherapist, Dr Dominique Makowski is an assistant professor at the University of Sussex and a world-leading expert on the perception and experience of reality.

His work spans altered states of consciousness, illusions, deception, fake news, with a focus on the role of the body and emotions in cognition (e.g., emotion regulation and interoception), with an emphasis on making advanced psychological methods (neurophysiology, Bayesian statistics, computational models) more accessible through open-source tools.

Reality Bending Lab

Exploring the neuropsychology of reality and its distortions.

The Reality Bending Lab, led by Dominique Makowski at the University of Sussex in Brighton, UK, conducts world-leading research on reality perception, illusions, fake news, AI-beliefs, deception and its links with emotions, cognitive control and the Self. Using recording signals from the body (ECG, EDA…) and the brain (EEG), we analyse data using advanced modelling (Bayesian statistics, chaos theory, computational models) and develop open-source tools to improve neuropsychological science.
